The sunflowers sprang up in a ribbon of soil beside the stamped concrete, in topsoil meant for backfilling, not growing. But sprouts took root. Someone was careless with a meal and generous with its crumbs.
In less than 100 days, the sun-loving blooms were heavy with thousands of seeds packed into a radiant core. A Fibonacci sequence, two spiraling whorls coiling in opposite directions, is nature’s way of maximizing space using mathematics.
A female goldfinch, dressed to blend with the ray florets, drifts in on the whisper of the wind.

Casting her tail skyward, she buries her beak deep into the seed basin.

Goldfinches are patient, waiting for sunflowers to bloom before nesting.
No blueprint.
Just a patch of sunlight,
a sequence of numbers,
and a bird with uncanny timing.
